What Is International Mother Language Day?

International Mother Language Day, observed on 21 February, is a UNESCO initiative that celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide. It highlights the importance of preserving mother tongues and promoting multilingual education for inclusive, equitable learning.

This year’s theme focuses on youth voices in multilingual education, recognising young people as key drivers of language preservation, innovation and cultural continuity. We'll be celebrating this as Ghanians in the diaspora looking to keep the Twi language alive in our community.

Why Twi Matters: Language, Identity and Culture

Twi is one of the most widely spoken Ghanaian languages and a cornerstone of Akan culture. For millions of speakers in Ghana and across the diaspora, Twi is more than a communication tool, it is a connection to heritage, family and identity.

Learning Twi helps young people and diaspora communities reconnect with their roots, strengthen cultural confidence, and participate fully in Ghanaian and global communities.

Multilingual education improves learning outcomes, cognitive development, and inclusion. When young people learn in their mother tongue alongside global languages, they gain stronger cultural understanding and self-confidence. By promoting Twi and other Ghanaian languages, we support inclusive education systems that value every learner’s language and identity.
